Lost?
"Sometimes, if you don't have anyplace to go, it's probably a good idea to stay where you are." - Whoopi Goldberg, Boys on the Side
Makes sense.
How many times have we found ourselves at a dead end? How many crossroads have we faced? We have to make countless choices every day, but they are all easy. Choices like where to eat for lunch, what to wear today, etc. But big choices like resigning from work, getting married, etc. take you to a place where you need to think a hundred times or more before making a life-changing decision. The nice thing about all of these is that you are in control. You make the choice and you have to live with it.
But what if the universe has seemingly conspired against you? Remember those times where you find yourself in the middle of chaos and uncertainty not because of your own doing? Those times when you feel helpless because you're not in control? That whatever you do might make matters worse? And in order to survive the crisis at hand, you have to coast along, ride the waves, roll with the punches, and whatever cliches you can think of? It's the kind of situation where you are knocked out senseless. Situations like death (you don't have any say on that matter, do you?) or destruction (fire comes to mind. Or earthquake.). We label these as acts of nature (some say they are acts of God). These situations make you lose your bearing, making you lose your sense of direction. And when everything settles down, you just feel... lost.
While others would panic when they realize the situation they are in, I choose to step back and assess everything. What's the use of running around if you don't know what to do, where to go? I try to be rational about it. But there are times when everything is beyond my understanding.
And when I realize that it's bigger than me, I stay where I am and I pray.
It's not a cop out. It has helped me a lot. One song goes, God is too wise to be mistaken. God is too good to be unkind. So when you can't see His hand, when you don't understand, trust His heart. Too often, my impatience has overtaken me. I know He is teaching me to wait on Him. So what can I do but wait. And while waiting, I pray. I pray that He will deliver me from whatever situation I am in. I trust that He will show me the way.
