Dolphy at 80

ABS-CBN gave a fitting tribute to the King of Comedy aired last Sunday, August 3. Taped live in the Meralco Theater on July 31, all the guests sang live (thank heavens for that!). It was a breath of fresh air seeing all the celebrities paying tribute to Dolphy sing live (German Moreno, hear! hear! I think this is the proper way to give tribute to a celebrity).

The boring part of the show was the cast of "Goin' Bulilit". At first, it was nice to see a bunch of talented kids singing, dancing and acting out episodes from the past tv shows of Dolphy. But alas, the spiels were terrible, bordering to corny. Cuteness can only last for a couple of minutes but to extend it beyond that, it would be tiresome.

The most disappointing part was when Willy Revillame went on stage, showcasing his insensitivity. I just found it totally terrible of Revillame to coax and dare Dolphy to do some dance moves with him. Dolphy even told him that he's not fit to do it, but begrudgingly gave in, even almost stumbling in the process. And what did Revillame do? He just asked if Dolphy faked the stumbling part. Anyone who has seen it would say that Dolphy almost took a fall. The nerve of this guy! Can't he see he's dealing with an octogenarian here? Revillame should know when to stop his antics.

The saving grace of the special? A taped portion of Dolphy and Vic Sotto doing a duet of songs. A classy act. The banter was precious. The two of them drawing parallels in their personal lives, joking about one another's style when it comes to women. The candidness of the whole segment was endearing.

Even though Dolphy openly states that Vic is his heir apparent to his throne, Vic humbly says that Dolphy is irreplaceable. Which I think is true--there will always be one Dolphy, the King of Comedy.

well said, rey. di yata talaga marunong umintindi ng simple salita ang taong ito. kawawa naman siya ... kasi puro upasala na lang ang kanyang natatanggap at parang natutuwa pa siya. tama ba 'bad publicity is still a publicity.'

nabasa ko nga sa youtube yung comment na, during his whole number na nagpapatawa siya, walang natatawa (which is true! napanood ko sa tv e) at nang paluin sya ng dyaryo ni dolphy, that brought down the house (again, true! lakas ng tawanan e!). forever sidekick lang talaga daw si willy. harsh words pero kung di siya magbabago, anything he'll do will always backfire.
