Yagit

Yes, you read it right. Yagit. This was drawn on September 12, 1984.  Hehehe  Brings back memories, huh?  Not that I am a fan of this afternoon soap way back in the 80s.  But the 80s wouldn’t be 80s without this Looney Tunes of a soap.

Aired after Lunch Date (if my memory serves me right), the soap starred Connie Angeles, Ernie Garcia, Janet Giron (who portrays Eliza--she’s the one on the left), Jocelyn Cruz as Jocelyn (beside Eliza in the drawing), Tomtom (the dark and fat boy--where’s he now?) and Zeny Zabala as Aling Claudia.  The soap was a huge hit that Viva Films made a movie version of it.  (Trivia: Magnolia Sabas sang the soap’s theme song superbly.)

I can’t recall the plot of the soap except the fact that I had fun watching these yagits. Guilty pleasure!! It seems that every day of every week, there’s a big chase scene where Aling Claudia (Zeny Zabala’s campy acting is tops!!!!) pays off three to four goons to kill Eliza, Jocelyn and Tomtom (later on, the show added another yagit — Jervy).

From the squalor of the slums (I think they were shooting in the depressed community in Cainta at that time) to the barren fields of the mountainous terrain of Rizal (Tanay? Taytay?), the goons tirelessly chase these children.  Bombs and traps are set to capture them or kill them but all for naught.  You’d wonder how ingenious these kids are.  They get caught, tied and bound but they escape.  And again, you’ll watch a full week of chasing and hiding.  What’s great about this soap is the Friday cliffhanger.  With matching babad of the cameras on the facial reaction of a character (surprised? fear? anxiety?), credits roll and you have to wait till Monday to see what happens next.

What really made me laugh during one full week of watching these yagits being chased was this particular scene: a bomb was planted by a goon to finally kill the children. Offscreen, you hear the kids coming, they were also being chased by the other goons, trapping them to where the bomb was planted.  Once trapped, the goon detonates the bomb.  Onscreen, you see the explosion.  You say to yourself, there’s no way the children could have escaped that!  Next scene: as smoke disappears, three heads appear from the bushes.  Very cartoony, the children’s clothes were ripped, their faces dirty with dust and ash…and no blood whatsoever.  They’re alive!  Unscathed by the explosion! Heheh… very Looney Tunes.

I dunno how the soap ended.  I couldn’t care less if they all die, after watching the bombing episode. Hehehe All I can remember is that Janet Giron was a good child actress (she played a young Sharon Cuneta in Bukas, Luluhod ang mga Tala and she can really sing–where is she now?).  And that Zeny Zabala delivers a great though campy acting.
