Halo-halo Memories
I had this unusual craving for halo-halo. So I indulged myself last Friday to Chowking's halo-halo. And a lot of good memories came flooding back. One of which was when I was still with One Manila.
Occasionally, Ms. Bing would treat us to a halo-halo when the heat got the better of us all. It was either Razon's or Chowking. But she prefers Razon's. She'd do the rounds in the office and ask who'd want halo-halo because she's treating. Unanimously, all of us would say yes. That was one bonding time for all of us. Truly unforgettable. And I am truly grateful that there were moments like that in One Manila. Back when we were all a big, happy family. Despite the issues we had, all of it vanished when the crunchy ice, leche flan, milk, pinipig, sago, langka and all those native fruits begin sliding down our throats. It was one of those moments we really looked forward to.
When I left One Manila for EQ Designs, I remember that I treated my new officemates to Chowking's halo-halo. I told them that it was on me since I got my last pay from One Manila. But truth be told, I was treating them since I already got my winnings from the gameshow I joined in. That time with my new-found office friends was also a nice time. Although our group was much smaller than One Manila, I can say that we were working together smoothly. Ah well... gone are those days...
My mother and I used to have those halo-halo moments, too. Those were the times when I accompanied her to the mall and let her do her windowshopping. After a tiring walk, we'd meet up and eat at some restaurant or settle ourselves in a Chowking outlet. And once we're in Chowking, halo-halo was always in the menu. I always ordered halo-halo for both of us. Of course, it was her treat! Hehehe.
Every time Mama and I eat halo-halo together, I always get to finish mine earlier. So I end up asking my mother if I can get some from her halo-halo. Of course, she'd refuse at first, but then... I still end up getting some. Hehehe. There were times that when I scoop a spoonful of fruits which Mama likes, she'd scrape it off my spoon! And we'd laugh together. Most of the time though, I get to finish her bowl of halo-halo since she didn't like the milk. (Of course, I'd gladly oblige!)
My sudden craving for halo-halo would mark the day of my mom's death anniversary... just in time for Mother's Day. It was like celebrating her memory while I was there at Chowking Galleria, reminiscing those fun days I had with Mama. I even bought a Chowking halo-halo radio to mark the day.
Mama passed away on May 10, 2003. And although 7 years have gone, I still remember those halo-halo moments with Mama. Happy Mother's Day, Mama!
