Cadillac Records

The movie gives you a crash course on how the blues became rock and roll. Told from the eyes of Muddy Waters (Jeffrey Wright), we see how the pillars of blues were discovered. The narrative bores the hell out of me hahahahahaha. (I've read somewhere that some critics had problems with the script). What keeps me going through the movie is the soundtrack. Very, very good!

While watching the movie, I got the feeling that Director Darnell Martin tried so hard to make this film worthy of an Oscar (sad to say, it didn't get any nomination). From the cinematic rice fields where Muddy Waters came from to the seedy Chicago scenes, from the drug overdose of Etta James (superbly portrayed by Beyonce Knowles) to the police brutality the blacks are subjected to during those time... whoa! The film screams for an Oscar! (Or maybe the pirated copy I was watching had "for your consideration" popping up intermittently after every 30 minutes.)

Where Jennifer Hudson stole the thunder from Beyonce in "Dreamgirls", here Beyonce shines. No wonder the critics are wowed by her acting and singing in the movie. I know, I was. But again, sad to say, she didn't get nominated in the Oscars. Oh well...
