The Wrestler

Rating:★★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Drama
Directed by Darren Aronofsky (The Fountain), The Wrestler lets you in on the life of an aging wrestler, Robin Ramzinski (aka Randy "The Ram" Robinson) superbly portrayed by Mickey Rourke (remember 9 1/2 weeks?). Aronofsky literally follows The Ram from sun up to sun down, and how The Ram lives his life till the very end. Aronofsky shot the scenes with a handheld camera that lends that that gritty realism, making it a personal experience for me. I get to empathize with The Ram and his small victories and painful trials. I get to realize the kind of life he had made for himself and feel for her forsaken daughter. The film makes you realize that there's no life for The Ram but the four corners of the ring as a wrestler, even after he had a bypass.

The movie is character-driven and the action scenes are just the backdrop in telling The Ram's story. And yes, Mickey Rourke gives a compelling performance worthy of an Oscar nomination (I hope he wins!).
