Ang Testigo (The Witness), Part 1

Note: Ang Testigo will be restaged in Baguio this May 16, 2009.  It's been more than two years since the first staging of the musical in GCF Center.  And we're blessed that we're invited to restage it in the launching of GCF Baguio with two performances, one in the afternoon and one in the evening.  I just thought it fitting to "reprint" my blog entries from friendster here in multiply.

Blog entry date: April 16th, 2007.

An attendance of 900+ in just one performance. From that, a total of 41 people accepted Christ as their personal Lord and Savior.  Who would have thought that a simple idea of staging an evangelical musical would have such a response?

Our praise and worship leader, Waldy del Rosario, has been toying with the idea of staging a musical during the regular schedule of the Tagalog service at Greenhills Christian Fellowship  held every Sunday at 3pm. He already had in mind the perfect material … but he had to translate it in Tagalog.

The Witness is a musical cantata in English.  Written many years after Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s musical Jesus Christ Superstar, but still in the clutches of the music of the 70s, imagine it being staged in Easter 2007, in Tagalog, with its original musical arrangement.

Waldy appointed himself to translate and revise parts of the material in Tagalog since there was an earlier translation done by Director Mark Aranal (who was, by the way, present when this cantata was staged on Easter 2007).  He also took upon himself to choreograph the musical.  And yes, to direct it also.

Yes, we have the material already.  We have the moves, you might say.  And we already have people who can do the solo, duets, etc.  But the problem was, the Tagalog Praise and Worship team regulars were only six to seven people.  We were confronted with the fact that in order to mount this cantata, we needed to recruit people from the congregation, as much as possible, who can sing and who will eventually be part of the Tagalog Praise & Worship.

As it is, the Lord provides.  Always…

To be continued…
