My Sister's Keeper: Very Good Adaptation of the Book

Instead of posting this as a review, I'd rather blog about it.  Why? Because it deserves more than just a capsule review.  I was able to watch the advanced screening of this movie last night at Megamall and I wasn't expecting to see the theater filled to the brim. I guess it's an indication that it won't be a hit movie for Cameron Diaz.  But there's always a chance that it can be a sleeper hit like the previous film of Director Nick Cassavetes' The Notebook.  Cassavetes again tries his hand on another adaptation and, for me, it works very well.  For those who are not familiar about the storyline, My Sister's Keeper   is about Ana, a designer baby, seeking medical emancipation from her parents since she seems to have grown tired of becoming an automatic matching donor for her elder sister Kate who's stricken with a rare form of leukemia. This is what I like about American drama.  It's understated and doesn't work hard to tug at your heart...

Heart-Shaped Box

Rating: ★★★★ Category: Books Genre: Horror Author: Joe Hill This is one exhilirating read! Very, very good pacing that keeps you turning pages! Stephen King must be proud of his son, Joe Hill. The story tells about a collector of the macabre, middle-aged rock star Judas Coyne, who bought a haunted suit online. Coyne realizes too late that the haunted coat belonged to the stepfather of his recently ditched girlfriend. And that's where the real haunting begins. Page after page, the story unravels smoothly, letting you know the characters' backstories. As the story builds up, you know you're in for a very satisfying ending. Not that you will fall in love with the characters (as I was reading the book, I don't really feel for the protagonist) but how they were all fleshed out by Hill makes them as real as the next-door neighbor (I love the dogs more... hehehe). Now that the book is optioned for a feature film, I wonder how this would translate into film. ...

Does PAG-ASA give us pag-asa?

Just asking.  Anyway, it was somewhat humid yesterday but not as rainy as expected.  And when I checked out my bookmarked weather resources online, there was a discrepancy in the storm tracking between the international weather bureaus and the local weather bureau... which I found strange.  Hmmmmmm... For those who want to check out how the weather looks like via satellite photos, visit Kochi University Weather Home .  It's the first site I go to whenever there's a bad weather report.  For details, you can visit Severe Weather Information Center .  Here, you can check out the forecast of different international weather bureaus (aside from PAG-ASA) so it would be more accurate.  -oOo- By the way, there are more pics of our trip to Baguio for the Ang Testigo staging.  Pics courtesy of Jeannette Tan's digicam.  Ciao for now!

That Sense of Foreboding (So I While Away the Waiting by Reading...)

Have you ever felt that something might happen but you don't know what?  It's that kind of feeling that you can't put a finger on except that you feel something is going to happen. It's kinda frustrating to have it. But I do have them time and again.  And when I get that feeling, I just open up myself to all possibilities and wait.  -oOo- Here's what I'm reading right now... Kevin Smith's autobiographical journal... If you're the type who's easily scandalized by how vulgar Kevin can get, don't read this book.  But, hey, he's crass and leads an interesting life as an artiste... It's an honest-to-goodness detailing of what happens in the life of a Kevin Smith.  His work, his habits, his family, his pasttime, his friends, etc. etc. etc. So if you don't dig him, don't read this.  In conjunction with reading Smith's autobio, I am also reading Joe Hill's Heart-Shaped Box.  I wanted to see how Step...

My Sister's Keeper

Rating: ★★★★ Category: Books Genre: Literature & Fiction Author: Jodi Picoult I first encountered Jodi Picoult's writing when she had her turn in scripting Wonder Woman. I found that her narrative was fluid and her humor delightful. When I visited the DC Message Boards, I learned that Jodi Picoult had penned many books, one of which was made into a movie and will be shown late June... My Sister's Keeper. When I saw the movie trailer, I began to hunt down the book but to no avail. Until Fully Booked had a promo when the paperback movie tie-in was released. Buy the book and you get a ticket to watch the advanced screening of My Sister's Keeper. My Sister's Keeper is about Ana who was genetically conceived by her parents to become the perfect bone marrow match for her sister Kate, who's suffering from a rare form of leukemia. Ana has become the perpetual donor for Kate's medical needs, from blood to tissue to bone marrow... Ana has never questi...

I've Got Time... (to read, especially now that books aren't taxed anymore!)

So, aside from texting, I busy myself with reading.  Aside from reading the daily newspaper, I still have my regular comicbooks.  And fairly recently, as you might have noticed, there've been book reviews in my site.  Which means, I've got time reading! Currently, I am reading Kevin Smith's My Boring-Ass Life.  Next up is The Gospel According to Judas Iscariot by Benjamin Iscariot (written by Jeffrey Archer, another historical fiction a la Christ the King by Anne Rice).  I bought The World of Krypton Volume 1 by Geoff Johns, 300 (yes, the one that was made into a very, very good movie) by Frank Miller, Mamma Mia! How Can I Resist You? (the story behind the musical, the movie and ABBA), and three books by Stephen King.   Knowing how erratic the workflow is in advertising, I am seizing every opportunity there is to read.  Nevermind how much movies (in dvds) I have in my backlog, nothing beats reading! So it's...
